All its facets sparkled in the sun
Casting tiny rainbows on my goose bumped skin
On arms wrapped round knees
Under my chin

It sat on its golden hill
The start and finish binding
Possessing and holding
An ownership on display

But the grip would tighten
And a constriction would come
And a desperate need for the bare
Would descend

And when it happened
The untethering was a revelation
Both terrifying and engaging
As one swimming against a current

The weeds of the pond tangling
The plug hole spiral
But those uncharted waters
With their sun warmed patches

And their cooler depths
Washed and eased
The salt stinging and healing
A life raft just glimpsed through side-eyes

So I’d swim
And breathe
And dive when needed
And face and ride the waves
