The Soldier’s Heart

Pour the blue black ink
Into the depths welling
To a surface arid
Parchment in need of the nib
Begging for the etch
And scribe
A letter in time
Four years of a longing
So roughly felt
That the pain punches
Its bruise
As deep as the ink
You used to cement such love
Sent overboard
Seaward
To my foxhole
Your word giving life
Holding my heart in place
With a page and a promise
To love
To be
To wait
Always
