Lullabies to Henry

As petals stretched on glass
Brittle, exquisite in fragility
I see through you

Your soul resting, out of time
1916 sees you arrive
1945 your first
1957 your second
Those years a part of you grew into two
2010 and the son of the daughter of your son blessed our lives

Your eyes in those decades
Saw red and black
A cruel angled cross
Accursed, hateful
Loss

They saw beauty too
Plains of Africa
Mountains of Europe
Love

You marched
Into your 80s you marched on parliament
You challenged
You fought

Your love of 70 years
Still holding you close
Still looks forward

You remain
You are here
You are loved

To my Grandfather Henry 1916-2013
